JOB SUMMARY: Businext’s digital newsroom is looking for a dynamic Markets & Economy Reporter to generate compelling stories that resonate with a young, ambitious audience of investors, entrepreneurs and rising executives in India and beyond. Ideally based in Mumbai, you will be responsible for identifying, reporting on and writing articles on market and economic developments in India for Businext’s website, mobile app and social media channels. You will be a team player, constantly collaborating with other reporters and editors to contribute to broader coverage and help our audience navigate markets and stay ahead of emerging trends. Editorially, coverage of markets will include a breadth of asset classes but focus most strongly on stock markets. Coverage of business may involve anything from rendering data on companies and industries to categories of tech. Coverage of macroeconomics will include growth, trade developments, interest rates, borrowing, inflation and other indicators of economic health, always returning to their impact on the individual investors and entrepreneurs who comprise our audience. Macroeconomics will also touch on geopolitics when they affect economics directly. The ideal candidate will be an established reporter with a track record of covering markets or economics in real time, strong news judgement and excellent writing skills. Experience working in a fast-moving digital newsroom, preferably in one of our core geographies in the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia, is a must. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Produce timely, insightful and engaging reports on Indian markets, macroeconomic trends and emerging market dynamics that align with the interests of young investors: helping them increase their personal wealth. Work to tight deadlines and adapt to breaking news situations promptly and efficiently. Stay ahead of the curve by identifying key trends and developments in the world of finance, markets and economics. Monitor and cover key economic data, company earnings and other releases Pitch sophisticated and unique stories aimed at informing the investment strategies of our core audience. Incorporate numbers and research to produce data-driven and data-supported stories, including with charts, graphs and other visual tools. Pitch compelling “second-day” story ideas that cater to an aspirational audience interested in investing, entrepreneurship and career progression. Cultivate sources in financial markets to stay informed of key developments and glean the insights our audience wants. Collaborate with other writers, videographers and social media journalists to contribute to broader coverage. Work with the digital strategy team to optimise content for web and social media platforms, driving engagement and audience growth. EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: Proven experience as a reporter or editor in India with a focus on economics, markets, business or finance. A strong understanding of complex financial concepts, coupled with the ability to unpack them to non-experts without compromising on insight. Cultural familiarity with India, with knowledge of one or more of our other geographies—Southeast Asia, the Middle East or Africa—a strong plus. Proficiency in Hindi or another Indian language is preferred. Degree or certification in journalism, economics, finance or a business-related field. SKILLS: Superior storytelling skills, including the ability to translate complicated market-related information into content that is accessible, relatable, compelling and offers real utility for the audience. Ability to work across multiple platforms, including but not limited to social media, video and written formats. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Comfort working with, parsing through and gleaning meaning from numbers and numerical data. Excellent news judgement and strong journalistic instincts with a commitment to accuracy and ethical reporting. Ability to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines. Proficiency with digital production tools and platforms. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Ability to work with colleagues spread across multiple time zones in a fast-paced newsroom. Flexibility to respond to news events and market changes outside typical working hours.
