Job Title: Piping Engineer

Overview: Responsible for the detailed design, material specification, and calculation of piping systems used in various industrial applications. This role involves ensuring that the design meets all applicable codes, standards, and client requirements, while also considering safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities: Detailed Piping Design: Develop and prepare detailed design layouts for piping systems, including isometrics, and GA (General Arrangement) drawings. Conduct 3D modeling of piping systems using software tools such as AutoCAD, PDMS, SP3D, or equivalent. Define routing, spacing, and support of pipes based on the design criteria and process requirements. Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (mechanical, civil, electrical) to ensure design compatibility. Material Specification: Prepare and review material specifications for piping systems, including selection of pipe material, valves, fittings, flanges, gaskets, and other components. Ensure material selection meets the process requirements, operating conditions (pressure, temperature, corrosion, etc.), and applicable codes and standards. Prepare tender specifications and assist in the evaluation of vendor bids. Calculation and Analysis: Perform stress analysis on piping systems to ensure mechanical integrity and compliance with applicable codes. Calculate pipe sizing, pressure drop, flow rate, and other necessary hydraulic calculations. Conduct thermal expansion analysis and determine the need for expansion loops or joints. Evaluate supports, anchors, and restraints for piping systems to ensure stability and safety. Compliance with Codes and Standards: Ensure all designs and specifications comply with relevant industry codes and standards such as: ASME B31.1 (Power Piping) ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) ASME B31.4 (Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquids and Slurries) API 570 (Piping Inspection Code) ASME Section VIII (Pressure Vessels) NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Standards ISO, DIN, and other international standards as applicable Documentation and Reporting: Prepare detailed technical documentation, including design reports, calculation sheets, and tender specifications. Provide input to the preparation of technical bid evaluations, construction cost estimates, and project schedules. Review and approve vendor drawings and documentation.

Required Knowledge and Skills: Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of fluid mechanics, as applied to piping systems. Proficient in using software tools for piping design, stress analysis (e.g., CAESAR II), and hydraulic calculations. Understanding of material properties and corrosion mechanisms relevant to piping systems. Industry Standards and Codes: Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME, API, and NFPA. Ability to interpret and apply codes to ensure compliance in the design and specification of piping systems. Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities to identify and resolve design challenges. Capability to perform complex calculations and analysis to ensure the reliability and safety of piping systems. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to prepare clear and concise technical documentation. Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Experience: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. 5-10 years of experience in piping design and engineering, preferably within the oil and gas industries. Professional certification (e.g., P.E. license, PMP) is an added advantage. Desirable Attributes: Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
